GIS MAPPING

Welcome to the City of Colfax GIS Page.  The City of Colfax is establishing a GIS system during the 2015 fiscal year. The system will support City of Colfax Departments.  Some future uses of GIS within the city will include infrastructure management, public works, growth planning, street improvements, and Internet mapping.

What IS GIS?  A GIS (Geographic Information System) is a computer system capable of assembling, storing, manipulating, and displaying geographically referenced information, i.e. data identified according to their locations.  Simply put, a GIS combines layers of information about a place to give you a better understanding of that place.  The layers of information you combine depends on your purpose.  Some common examples would include: finding the best location for a new store, analyzing environmental damage, viewing similar crimes in a city to detect a pattern, and so on. Click here to learn more about what GIS is and the associated benefits of establishing a GIS system.
